SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
In 1967, Carolinas’ Carrousel, Inc., instituted its
Carrousel Queens Scholarship Program
to recognize outstanding students in the region. Each area high
school was invited to select a senior girl to represent the
school and compete for the college scholarships offered by the
Carolinas’ Carrousel.
The list of 2008 Carrousel Representatives has been announced. To see photos of these outstanding students, click here. The 2008 Carrousel Queen and her Court will be announced on Wednesday evening, November 26.
That program continues today. Scholarships are awarded to the
Carrousel Queen and four Carrousel Court members. The program
also selects Miss Congeniality and awards a Community Service
trophy, in addition to granting the Bill and Mary Ann York
Community Service Award.
All of the Carrousel reps also participate in many exciting
activities, culminating in the traditional ride in the
Carolinas’ Thanksgiving Day Parade.
In 1998, the
Marching Band Scholarship Program
was added, offering scholarships to band members with matching
awards to the student’s high school. The
Robert L. Maddox Music Scholarship
was established in 2000 to honor Dr. Maddox’s exemplary
leadership in music education in Charlotte.
On the 60th Anniversary of the parade, the Carrousel
Scholarship program was re-named the John M. Belk Scholarship
Fund in recognition of one of the founders of the original
“Charlotte Christmas Festival,” the pre-cursor to the Carolinas’
Carrousel and Carolinas’ Thanksgiving Day Parade. Going forward, the scholarships will be granted in the name of the Belk Carrousel Scholarship Fund.
