THE ROBERT L. MADDOX MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Dr.
Robert L. Maddox was a native of Odessa, Texas. He earned a
bachelor's degree in music from North Texas University and
graduate degrees in music from New York University. After
serving in the US Army and teaching in Columbia, SC, he moved to
Charlotte, NC, in 1963. He spent the rest of his career in
Charlotte-Mecklenburg where he directed instrumental music
programs at Garinger and Providence High Schools.
Maddox was also a key figure in organizing the Charlotte Youth
Symphony and instrumental in starting the Charlotte Summer Pops
program. In addition, after the death of his wife, Irene, in
1996 he continued leadership of the Charlotte Flute Choir that
she had started.
The Carolinas' Carrousel Board of Directors selected Dr. Maddox
as the Grand Marshal of the Carolinas' Carrousel Parade in 2000
and established The Robert L. Maddox Music Scholarship to honor
his exemplary leadership in the music education field.
The Carolinas' Carrousel organization is ever mindful of the
efforts of dedicated individuals like Dr. Maddox and was
saddened by his death in October 2001. The Carrousel is pleased
to honor his memory with this scholarship to help insure the
continuance of a legacy of leadership & excellence in music and
education in his name. |
